Irish Bass Protection and Awareness Group |
Who are we?
The Irish Bass Protection and Awareness Group was formed in response to the decline of European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) in Irish coastal waters. Despite the bye-laws and regulations that have existed to protect Bass in Ireland since 1990, scientific evidence shows that stock levels remain severly depleted. We believe that illegal commercial fishing for Bass (poaching), supported by clandestine illegal trading, poses the greatest threat to the survival of Bass in Irish coastal waters.
Our aims are to:
- Lobby for greater enforcement of existing Bass bye-laws and regulations
- Ensure that suitable bye-laws and regulations remain in place to protect Irish Bass and facilitate the recovery of stock levels
- Cooperate with official state bodies and representative organisations to further our knowledge of Bass in Irish coastal waters
- Raise awareness of the threat to Irish Bass among anglers, commercial interests, consumers and the wider public

What can I do to help?
There are lots of ways you can help to protect Irish Bass. The most important way you can help is simply to abide by the legal measures in place to protect our Bass, and to encourage others to do likewise. You can also apply here to become a member of the Irish Bass Protection and Awareness Group.
